All that is outside of himself interests him ; and, in the lowerpopulace, this interest becomes an insatiable curiosity. Two persons are quarrelling overa bargain,—a couple of children at play begin to fight,—a deserted kitten is sitting out inthe street,—a canary-bird has flown away,—immediately a circle of curious spectators, oftenamounting to hundreds, is formed to observe the trivial circumstance and to discuss it inall its bearings with much energy and vociferation ! In the same way a bright light, apretty face, or the rich dresses of the quality are subjects of demonstrative admirationand attention. They cannot let their voices stay idle in their throats. They must comeforth, and at their full pitch too! Singing and shouting goes on from morning to night;
