Nederlands: Vijf meisjes naar Londen

„Denk er om, acht uur vijftig Centraal Station. Zorg, dat je een beetje vroeg bent", had Ma Braun op de laatste bijeenkomst van de Olympische zwemsters gezegd. En ze waren vroeg. Voor achten kwam de struise, blonde schoolslagzwemster Jannie de Groot al binnenstappen met Coby Floor, de kleine, donkere schoonspringster. Daarna kwam Hannie Termeulen — niet precies stuurs, maar toch met een gezicht alsof haar allerlaatste crawlspurtje in Amsterdams water niet zo erg gelukkig was geweest.

En tenslotte uit Hilversum, Nel van Vliet. De grote troef op de klassieke schoolslag had wèl de glimlach van de grote dagen. En de jonge Tonny Hom, aan Nel's rechterhand, droeg de nieuwe, fleurige Olympische uniform met zoveel charme alsof zij haar zélf had uitgekozen.
