| Description |
English: Jefferson Parish Louisiana, along the Mississippi River bank, just up river of the New Orleans city limits.
Last community of "Bature dwellers" in the area. Land between the levee and the river is called the "Batture". Considered part of the river (which it is in high water), the land is Federal rather than city, and poor long squatted here at their own risk, building shacks on stilts. Such became numerous during the Great Depression; people living on the batture were known as "Batture dwellers". Most such encampments were cleared decades ago, but this small long established community succeeded in staking a claim here. I beleive the Levee Board charges them some sort of rent or fee to cross the levee to access their homes. |
