Description: It is common practice to allow the first few barrels of oil to run into the mud pit. This is burned off, because it contains salt water, mud, & other impurities. After that the oil is diverted into separator tanks. Source: Negative sleeve 1839-4. The men depicted in this image, in which an oil well fire is burning in the background, are identified as John Butler, an unnamed Humble field superintendent, and an unnamed third man. Source: Negative sleeve 1834-9.

Physical Description: 1 negative: film, black and white; 10.3 x 13.1 cm.
