Text Appearing Before Image:
lant also drew from the life in black andwhite. There is a mezzotinto, as I am informed,by him, of Queen Henrietta Maria, sitting in afringed chair, with a little girl resting against herknees, and a young man leaning on the back ofthe chair; he has a ribband cross his shoulder, the edges of which are a little fringed : The ladyis at work. I have never seen this print, but itcorresponds so much with part of the picture ofSir Balthazar Gerbiers family by Vandyck, men-tioned in the second volume of these Anecdotes, that I suspect the lady is not the Queen, but Ger-biers wife. (He likewise engraved a large headof Charles Louis, Prince Palatine, the elder bro-ther of Prince Rupert, 1656. His own portrait;that of his wife; of his father. Frobenthe printerafter Holbein. Netscher, Vandyck, and somesubjects from eminent masters.) * (See Descamps, v. ii. p. 331. This anecdote may have de-served all the credit it has found, but other artists had thendiscovered more of the art than Vaillant knew.)

H&We JfOM ISTmiLTW 111 REIGN OF CHARLBS II. 171 MR. JOHN EVELYN. Non solum de his omnibus conscripsit artibus ; sed amplius reitusHcce et militaris etiam, et medicince prcescripta reliquit; dignusvel ipso proposito, ut eum scisse omnia ilia credamus. QulNTILlAN. If Mr. Evelyn had not been an artist himself,as I think I can prove, I should yet have found itdifficult to deny myself the pleasure of allotinghim a place among the arts he loved, promoted, patronized ; and it would be but justice to inscribehis name with due panegyric in these records, asI have once or twice taken the liberty to criticizehim: But they are trifling blemishes comparedwith his amiable virtues and beneficence ; and itmay be remarked that the worst I have said ofhim is, that he knew more than he always com-municated. It is no unwelcome satire, to saythat a mans intelligence and philosophy is inex-haustible. I mean not to write his life, whichmay be found detailed in the new edition ofhis Sculptura, in Collins
