Title
Joke Medal from Roxby cum Risby
Description
English: Lead

Medal. Cast lead sheet with a curving cut edge, and raggedly torn and broken along one side; the original form may have been that of an heraldic shield or pelta shaped plaque, appropriate to an award. The object bears a crudely incised or rouletted design of curving lines which frame a series of triangles, above which further lines define two fields of letters in Roman script or capital letters and a further field of intersecting lines. The legend appears to read: CHAMPI(?ON?) / LIAR, and perhaps indicates this piece to be a mock award, conceived in jest or malice. The reverse bears assorted cuts and gouges, but also the legend: THE / L . This object was reported along with another fragment of lead sheet bearing crudely rouletted decoration, and may arise from the same recreational episode - it is difficult to ascribe a serious function to either piece. The lettering style suggests this object to be of relatively recent date. Suggested date: Modern, 1880-1950.

Length: 65.2mm, Width: 52.5mm, Thickness: 2.7mm, Weight: 47.64gms
