Despite claim by the w:National Gallery, it is contended that this is a "slavish reproduction" of an existing work which is free of copyright due to its age and there is nothing in the NG version that adds any creative interpretation to the image; in short, it might as well just be a scan of the original.

This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art. The work of art itself is in the public domain for the following reason:

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.
