Orphanage at Halle. 27 should be sent on the mission at that time. For this im-portant service Daniel Falckner was selected. He was aman of strong character and practical piety, as well as theexecutive head of the community, and, in addition to hisreligious duties, took considerable interest in secular affairs. Daniel Falckner, pursuant to the above arrangement, re-turned to Europe, as before stated, toward the close of theyear 1698 or early in the spring of 1699. After a shortsojourn in Holland, he went to Germany to visit his oldassociates. Upon his arrival in Saxony, he found thattime had wrought many changes in the condition of hisformer companions — some had been banished, otherslived in obscurity, while the former leader of the localPietistical movement, August Herman Francke, nowposed as professor of Oriental languages at the newlyestablished University of Halle,8 pastor of the suburbGlaucha, and superintendent of an orphanage of his ownprojection.
