"К сожалению, стремление сидеть на двух стульях и привело к тому, что мы имеем. А потом, видите ли, когда задается вопрос, что, мол, по объективным причинам развалился Советский Союз, надо внимательно посмотреть на динамику развития конфликта в самом Политбюро. Это было на моих глазах. Ведь в Политбюро, в самом Политбюро, на самом верху политической вершины, образовались совершенно в ряде случаев несовместимые группировки. Но если бы это было только в Политбюро. Скажем, между собой ведут дискуссию, вырабатывают какую-то линию, а потом эту единую линию проводят. А когда эти группировки начинают опираться на различные силы в обществе, понимаете, о чем идет речь? То есть происходит раздвоение всего политического процесса в масштабах страны, что и произошло. А эпицентром этого противоборства, будем так говорить, оказались, это надо признать, Горбачев и Ельцин. Основная пружина, одна из основных, пусть не одна, а одна из основных, именно там запрятана".
