Description
English: The Ottoman Empire was one of the world's premier great powers in the 17th century. And one which was also expanding. The empire's special guardians were the Janissaries; elite soldiers with a strong religious conviction. Thanks to their successes, the organisational structure, reward system and battle music of these troops had an impact on European armies. Different forms of Islamic ornamentation also found their way into Europe. For example, there are Dutch tile ovens with “arabesques” at Skokloster Castle and its library contains two beautifully bound books, of which this copy of the Qur'an is one. The reason why Carl Gustaf Wrangel purchased this Qur'an is unknown. Wrangel's library also contains a contemporary description in German of the Qur'an and the Ottoman Empire. The purpose was perhaps to get to know his enemy, or to admire the beauty of the text, or simply to have the pleasure of owning an exotic object.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II (more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions (more information).
