| Description |
Replica at Hong Kong Museum of History. This treaty, signed by the United Kingdom and Manchu China, gave the British a 99-year lease on Kowloon and the New Territories, to supplement their permanent colony in Hong Kong. The lease was signed in 1898, to expire on 1 July 1997. It was the negotiations in 1984, over the future of Hong Kong after the expiration of the lease, that led to the agreement to not only terminate the leases on Kowloon and New Territories, but return Hong Kong Island to China as well. The condition was that China had to maintain Hong Kong's British-style capitalist and democratic system for a further 50 years, which China is doing a surprisingly good job of. |
