| Description |
Still on the Étoile (Star), a traffic circle with 12 boulevards radiating out centered by Arc de Triomphe. This plaque says: "11 November 1918, Return of Alsace and Lorraine to France." Alsace and Lorraine are on the Rhine River, and has flipped repeatedly between longtime enemies France and Germany. Their flip to the French side was the most recent change in 1918. The main city in the area is Strasbourg, whose name the Germans still insist on spelling as Straßburg. However, with the rise of the European Union, the two countries have become close strategic partners, to the chagrin of the UK and the US. (In fact, I had arrived from Stuttgart the previous evening on the new Strasbourg-Paris high-speed train line. It is busy with rail traffic between Paris and Germany, using both French and German bullet trains.) |
