Lawrence has anexcellent equipment and does its work in a mannerwhich has won for it a most enviable reputation, yet itscharges are lower than those of almost any college in thecountry of its class. Every effort has been made to keep itsexpenses at the lowest figure possible. It is safe to say thata student can take a course at Lawrence on less than half whatit will cost him at a large university and as cheaply as at anyother institution of like grade in the middle west. There are various helps for needy students in the way ofscholarships and loan funds. There are also excellent chancesto secure employment. A large per cent of the young men areearning their own way. An Employment Bureau is main-tained to assist needy students in finding places to work. Manyclub together and reduce their expenses thereby. LAWRENCE COLLEGE BULLETIN 19 LAWRENCE THE RIGHT SIZE FORCOLLEGE WORK IT is generally conceded that for undergraduate work theideal college is one of moderate size. A small college lacksthe enthusiasm which comes from a goodly company ofstudents and usually does not have the organization andvariety of courses or the equipment of a larger school. Onthe other hand, a large university usually lays the emphasis ongraduate, professional and technical training and turns theundergraduate over to tutors and instructors, usually youngmen without experience, who work on very small salaries andare not equal to professors of a strong college. Acquaintancewith teachers is not common. Close supervision of the stu-dents s work is not usual and ideals of life are not high. Butlittle opportunity is given for participation in the responsibil-ity of student organization. Living expenses are always high-er.
