Title
Lead dominoes
Description
English: Three lead dominos, probably dating to the 18th century. The dominos are cast and each has a numerical value in dots, divided with a line down the centre, as on modern dominos. The domino with a value of 8 (6 and 2) weighs 9.07g and measures 32mm in length, 16.6mm in width and 3.6mm in thickness. The domino with a value of 3 weighs 9.26g and measures 32.5mm in length, 16.6mm in width and 3.7mm in thickness. The domino with a value of 6 (two sets of 3), weighs 7.6g and measures 31.8mm in length, 16.1mm in width and 3.06mm in thickness; it is slightly more worn than the other two pieces.

The earliest domino sets are thought to date from the 13th century and originate in China. The game reached Europe by the 18th century and is thought to derive its name from the French word ‘Domino’ for a black and white hood worn by Christian priests in winter.
