com-mune being the two chief kinds. Milk acids are alwaysfound and to their presence should be attributed the acid re-action. Fermentation of milk-sugar leads to the develop-ment of carbon-dioxide and hydrogen, which are the prin-cipal gases in the intestinal tract of an healthy infant fedpurely on milk, foul smelling gases being conspicuous bytheir absence. Though the amount of fseces varies much insucklings yet three per cent, of the milk ingested is theaverage proportion. It is by the stady of the digestive processes at differentperiods that we may hope to solve the problem of physio-logical feeding. To him who would not only secure thehighest lesults in infant nutrition, but also determine someof the questions as to the etiology of digestive disturbanceswith their intricate pathological sequelas, the study of thephysio-chemics of digestion will be fraught with interest.
