July 7th 1864

Dear Father and mother


I take my pen in hand for the perpose of writing a few lines to let you know that I am well and also to let you know the news I have never seen as much excitement pravleid[prevailed?] in my life as thare does here the last too or three days it is reported here that thare is thurty thousand Rebels in this state they crossed the Rapahanick[Rappahannock] near harpers Ferry the people are runing in every direction with their horses and stock of all kinds they are like a set of crazy folks I doant know wether to whether to say that the news is reliable or not though I rather think it is we are ordered to be reddy to retreat to Harsburgh[Harrisburg] at a moments warning so we will not show the rebs any fight until we get to Harisburgh[Harrisburg] if we do then I doant think that our Co will ever see them at all for we have no arms and are not calcolated to do any fightining no how so mother doant be skerd about me for I am perfectly safe doant think because the Rebs are coming that I am killed I am thrown in to a dich half berried and all such foolishness but prey that I am come through safe and rest contented about me doant be like the people of this Country let excitement run off with your brain so no more at present I will write agane as soon as it is all over I remain you true son untell deth
