English: Spirit level, "Wood and metal casing. Believed made c.1837. Mr Hepburn understands from his father that the spirit levels were brought to NZ from Scotland by his great grandfather. He came to Russell after working in NSW to build houses for the NSW govt. He came to NZ in 1837 and then came down to Auckland and bought land where squirrel, the auctioneer had premises behind John Court's in High Street in 1840. Mr Hepburn's grandfather claimed to the first white boy born in Auckland and argued the privilege with Mr Charles Stone of Onehunga for years." (col.card)
