Description

Sixth of Henry Holiday's original ilustrations to "The Hunting of the Snark" by Lewis Carroll.

This is printed in Fit the Fourth: The Hunting, but arguably illustrates the start of Fit the Fifth: The Beaver's Lesson, as they are told to carry out the actions depicted in Fit the Fourth, but aren't said to do it until the start of Fit the Fifth.

In Fit the Fourth, the Bellman says:

...'Tis your glorious duty to seek it [the Snark]!
To seek it with thimbles, to seek it with care;
    To pursue it with forks and hope;
To threaten its life with a railway-share;
    To charm it with smiles and soap.

And at the start of Fit the Fifth:

They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care;
    They persued it with forks and hope;
They threatened its life with a railway-share;
    They charmed it with smiles and soap.

This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Honduras has a general copyright term of 75 years, but it does implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II (more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions (more information).
