The list of its friends is daily swelled by theadditions of fifties, of hundreds, and of thousands.The cause itself seems suddenly transformed froma cold, abstract theory into a living, breathing,active, and powerful chieftain, going forth con-quering and to conquer. The citadels of his greatadversary are daily being stormed and disman-tled ; his temples and his altars, where the rites ofhis idolatrous worship have long been performed,and where human sacrifices have long been wontto be made, are daily desecrated and deserted.The trump of the conquerors fame is soundingfrom hill to hill, from sea to sea, and from land toland, and calling millions to his standard at ablast. 40

The warfare heretofore waged against thedemon intemperance has, somehow or other, beenerroneous. Either the champions engaged, or thetactics they adopted, have not been the mostproper. These champions, for the most part, havebeen preachers, lawyers, and hired agents; be-tween these and the mass of mankind there is awant of approachahility, if the term be admissible,partial, at least, fatal to their success. They aresupposed to have no sympathy of feeling or in-terest with those very persons whom it is theirobject to convince and persuade.
