(25) LINCOLN AT GETTYSBURG We all, headed by a brassband, marched to Mr. Willsshouse and serenaded Mr. Lin-coln, who appeared upon theveranda, but said little morethan to excuse himself fromspeaking. After this we sere-naded Secretary Seward, whomade quite an extended ad-dress, and afterwards we sere-naded others, who also spoke. JOHN HAY LINCOLN AT GETTYSBURG bound volume of The CenturyMagazine, running from Nov-ember, 1893, to April, 1894. After saying that there is nodecisive record of when Mr.Lincoln wrote the first sen-tences of his proposed address,Mr. Nicolay speaks of Mr. Lin-colns usual custom of usinggreat deliberation in arranginghis thoughts and moulding hisphrases, mentally, waiting toreduce them to writing untilthey had taken satisfactoryform. THE ADDKESS NOT INTENDEDTO BE LONG There was greater necessityof precaution in this case, be-cause the invitation specified (27) LINCOLN AT GETTYSBURG that the address should onlybe a few appropriate remarks.After saying that *brevity inspeech and writing was one ofLincolns marked characteris-tics, and that Mr. Everettwould be quite certain to makea long address, and after speak-ing of the want of opportunityfor Mr. Lincoln even to thinkleisurely, Mr. Nicolay con-cludes the remark by saying:All this strongly confirms thecorrectness of the statementmade by t
