hapedbrackets. The end sill of the car is pressed out ofone sheet of steel, reinforced by gusselplates, which are riveted to it and the mainsills of the car. The car is tied together by a transverse best practice in wooden construction, andwhile there are no startling innovationsin its make-up, it will pay for an examina-tion by those who are interested in amechanical production showing practicewhich is the result of thought based onexperience. The car is 35 feet long over end sills, and 8 feet 6 inches wide over side sills,34 feet 4-\s inches long inside. 7 feet ll$iinches wide inside, and 6 feet I0J4 inchesclear bight inside. These dimensions give1,872 cubic feet of space available for load, making the car come well within the linesof most of cars of its nominal capacity, and leaving it off of the list of the bigones with their surplus of avoirdupois perpound of hauling capacity. All six longitudinal sills are 5 x 9 in-ches, and end sills are 7x9 inches. The 560 LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING.

The side braces are 5^2x 2)4 inches and the end braces are 4 x3 inches. All these dimensions show aremarkable liberality in material whereneeded, and that material of the best kindfor the service, white oak, except in caseof the long sills, which are of southernpine. The body is well braced with f^-inchdiagonal rods over the bolsters, and wellsupplied with framing rods at the doorposts and second panels as well as at theend posts. The four long truss rods arelzi inches on the body and have the endsenlarged to ij^j inches diameter. Cornerplates inside and out furnish the staying atthose points, the plates being fastened to the body by button head bolts with headson the inside; the plates at the girths form-ing a washer for a rod that extends back to the post over the body bolster, forming avery efficent tie at the four corners
