Deze bisschopsstaf wordt door de parochianen uit Tilburg aan Zwijsen cadeau gedaan wanneer hij in 1842 tot bisschop zonder bisdom wordt gewijd. In 1853 komen er vijf nieuwe bisdommen en benoemt de paus Zwijsen tot bisschop van Den Bosch en tegelijk tot aartsbisschop van Utrecht. Zo is hij de katholieke herder van het grootste deel van Nederland. Vanuit deze zware dubbelfunctie organiseert de ‘bisschop-krachtpatser’ de Nederlandse katholieke kerkprovincie.
