Naar Pieter Aertsen, tweede helft 16e eeuw Museum Catharijneconvent BMH s560

Vanaf de Middeleeuwen horen de os en de ezel bij het kerstverhaal. Ze verwijzen naar de profeet Jesaja die hun aanwezigheid bij het kind in de kribbe al had voorspeld. Terwijl de ezel op de achtergrond staat, speelt de os hier een hoofdrol. Geen wonder: de inwoners van de Lage Landen zijn heel trots op hun runderen. Die worden op de vette klei geweid om daarna met veel winst te worden verkocht. Dergelijke vetgemeste ossen, soms wel drieduizend pond zwaar, geeft men ook als cadeau aan hoogwaardigheidsbekleders. De later zo gehate hertog van Alva ontvangt in 1568 twee van zulke ossen als geschenk.
