Limoges, begin 13e eeuw ABM m905 en 906

In de Middeleeuwen gebruikt de priester een pyxis, een soort doos, waarin na de viering van de mis de hosties bewaard werden. Hosties zijn stukjes ongezuurd brood. Ze verwijzen naar het brood dat Christus tijdens het Laatste Avondmaal onder zijn leerlingen verdeelde.

Deze twee met bloemranken en medaillons geëmailleerde pyxides zijn gemaakt in de Franse stad Limoges. Voor hun vorm en versiering hebben de makers zich laten inspireren door de geëmailleerde kerkschatten uit het Byzantijnse Rijk.
