Description
Français : Arles (Bouches-du-Rhône, France), au musée départemental de l'Arles antique, autel d'Apollon aux cygnes: marbre, fin premier siècle avant J.C., trouvé sur le site du théâtre antique en 1834. Placé au centre de l'orchestra où il était voué à Apollon, dieu de la musique et de la poésie. Les cygnes rappellent le survol de l'île de Délos par ces oiseaux lors de la naissance du dieu; ils tiennent dans leur bec les bandelettes d'une couronne de laurier symbolisant la domination d'Auguste. Les palmiers réunis par une guirlande de fruits évoquent le seul arbre ayant pu pousser sur l'île de Délos et au pied duquel Léto avait donné naissance à Artémis et Apollon. La qualité exceptionnelle de cet œuvre fait pencher pour une production attique du premier siècle avant J.C.
