Description
English: Polyptych in the Mainz Cathedral. Carving of the altarpiece attributed to Hans Wydyz, about 1510. The Madonna with the Child, is named the "Beautifuly Lady of Mainz". She is flanked by Saint Martin of Tours, patron saint of the diocese of Mainz and Saint Boniface the first archbishop of Mainz.
Deutsch: Flügelaltar im Mainzer Dom (Marienkapelle). Die Maria im Zentrum des Altars wird im Volksmund als die "schöne Mainzerin" bezeichnet. Die Madonna mit dem Kind ist in der Spätgotik um ca. 1510 entstanden. Sie wird von den Heiligen Martin (links) und Bonifazius (rechts) flankiert. Um 1875 hinzugefügt wurden die beiden Seitenflügel, im linken Flügel des Alters ist die Geburt Jesu im Stall dargestellt und im rechten Flügel die Erscheinung des Herrn, Epiphanias. Die Figuren werden Hans Wydz zugeschrieben, da sie in enger künstlerischer Verbindung zu gotischen Figuren aus dem Straßburger und Freiburger Raum stehen. Schrein wie auch Farbfassung wurden im 19. Jahrhundert zugefügt. Der Mittelschrein ist mit Maßwerkgesprenge verziert. Hans Wydyz (auch Wydz oder Wyditz) war ein oberrheinischer Künstler, der im Freiburger Raum tätig war; über dessen Herkunft und Familie heute nichts mehr bekannt ist. Auf der Rückseite der rechten Altartafel wurde ein Bild des Stifters Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler eingearbeitet, das diesen 1875 bei der Einweihung der von P. J. H. Cuypers abgeschlossenen Renovierung der Ost-Gruppe zeigt. Ketteler wurde am 18. Juli 1877 in dieser Marienkapelle beigesetzt. Auf der Rückseite der linken Altartafel befindet sich ein Bild des Domstifters Willigis.
