We continued along the right bank throughthe Nantin valley, the sides of which presentedthree distinctly marked river terraces, and, havingforded the river, entered the little Shan town ofMnangtee, or Myne-tee, one hundred and eightmiles from Bhamo. The walls were crowded, andthe short narrow street through which we passedwas thronged with women and children. Yery fewmen were visible, owing, as we were informed, to theincessant fighting, which had killed off most of themale population. A mile beyond we reached the small walledChinese town of Nantin, now held by the Panthays.Two officers on ponies met and conducted us throughthe gate to a ruined Chinese temple. This had oncebeen a handsome structure, but the walls wereriddled with shot, the images defaced, and brokenopen in search of plunder. Nantin itself showed allthe signs of having been once a thriving Chinesetown. Now one-half of it was in ruins, and theother tenanted by a scanty and miserably poor
