Text Appearing Before Image:
e upright is held betweenthe thumb and forefinger, and the small hammer is dropped upon thesteel cylinder from a constant height, A small disk attached to a pin, notshown in the cut, is used for bone-conduction and other diagnostic tests. Lehmanns acoumeter (Fig. 41)) has the advantage of allowing varia-tion of intensity, and is thus better adapted to the space limits of the ordi-nary laboratory,* but it is, nevertheless, not very satisfactory for practicaltesting. The acoumeter described by Toulouse, Vaschide, and Pieron (18) sub-stitutes a drop of distilled water for the metallic ball, and an aluminumdisk for the receiving plate. Many attempts have been made to devise an instrument that will per-mit testing at the ear itself, in order the better to rule out disturbingnoises. Commonly, these devices are electrical in nature, and are plannedto utilize a telephone receiver in which clicks or tones are produced in agraded series of intensities.- Typical of these instruments is Seashores

FIG, UO. SEASHORES ALUIOMETEK. *For description, see Hansen and Lehmunn (7). For an extended discussion of the technique, and particularly of thecalibration of this type of apparatus, consult Bruner (5). 204 SENSORY CAPACITY audiometer (Fig. 50), which has been fully described by its inventor(15;, and which has been extensively employed by him (16) and byothers, e, g., ^y the Child Study Bureau at Chicago (9, 17). Where itscost is not an obstacle this audiometer is to be recommended as the bestdevice for testing hearing by the use of faint clicks or tones. The audiometer invented by McCallie is nearly as expensive as the Sea-shore instrument, and is very far from being as satisfactory. It is opento objection in principle and in construction, and the authors experiencewith it does not confirm the favorable endorsements passed by someinvestigators. Tuning forks may be employed for acuity tests in accordance With themethod first suggested by Von Conta (20), in which a 512 vs. fork isstru
