time it raged tremendously. It burned all the hoiises on the east side of the Whitehall slip,and the west side of Broad street, to Beaver street; a providen-tial and happy circumstance occurred at this time ; the wind wasthen southwesterly, about two oclock in the morning the windthen veered to the southeast ; this carried the flames of the fireto the westward, and burned both sides of Beaver street to theeast side of Broadway, then crossed Broadway to Beever lane, andburning all the houses on both sides of the Broadway, with somefew houses in New street to Eecior street, and to John Harrisons,Esq., three-story brick house, which house stopped the fire on theeast side of the Broadway ; from thence it continued burping allthe houses in Lumbard street, and those in the rear of the houseson the west side of Broadway to St. Pauls church, then continuedburning the houses on both sides of Partition street, and all thehouses in the rear (again) of the west side of Broadway to theNorth River.
