Description
English: Silver-filigreed casket given as a wedding gift to Alexander and Maria of Yugoslavia, Maryhill Museum of Art, Maryhill, Washington. The front of the casket features a rendition of the coat of arms of Serbia's Karađorđević dynasty (i.e. the coat of arms of Serbia). The heads of the bicephalic eagle must have been broken off, but its body and shield with the cross and four firesteels is still visible. An inscription below the coat of arms is written in Serbian Cyrillic script and it is dated 8 June 1922 fits with the date that Maria of Romania ("Mignon", daughter of Queen Marie of Romania, 1900-1961) married King Alexander I of Yugoslavia. Maria and Alexander gave the silver filigree box and a toilet set—all of them their own wedding gifts from 1922—to Alma de Bretteville Spreckels “for a museum.” Mrs. Spreckels gave them to the Maryhill Museum of Art, which she played a major role in founding, in 1951.
