Summary[edit]

Description
English: Side panel 4, Kirkham Chantry Screen, late 15th c., Church of St John The Baptist, Paignton, Devon. Relief sculpture in stone depicting the Mass of St Gregory (per: Pevsner, Nikolaus & Cherry, Bridget, The Buildings of England: Devon, London, 2004, p.838). Standing figure of Christ on altar vandalised by Puritans, only one leg and one arm remain. w:Instruments of the Passion depicted, 3 nails, ladder, etc. The w:reredos of the altar is decorated with four gothic arches, each containing a shield à bouche, in fashion at a particular short period (late 15th c.), used for jousting and also in heraldry, which assist in the dating of the work. Pope Gregory is shown at left, with two kneeling deacons or monks, with two standing cardinals.
