Description |
English: A depiction of the Mawgan Cross in Mawgan-in-Meneage, from the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of "Cornwal" (Cornwall), the third in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales... The pillar is called a cross because the top has been reshaped in a way that suggests an ornamental crossbar was previously attached to it. It is presently too worn to read any inscription but previous sources—including Moll's own—report that it was previously inscribed with Greek and Latin message, presumably for original use as a boundary stone near the close crossroads. Moll has written GNEGVMIFILI ENANS ("[Stone] of Gnegumus Son of Enan") but others variously report CNEGVMI FIL... ENANS and ONEGVMI, GNEGVMI, and CNEGVMI FILI GENAIVS (taken to mean "[Stone] of Cnegumus, Gnegumus, or Onegumus Son of Genaius" rather than "Genaius Son of Cnegumus, Gnegumus, or Onegumus") or "an inscription in Cornish" meaning "What Lieth Here Is Not the Soul". Some sources further report that the Greek letters ΑΜΩ were vertically inscribed near the top of the stone, taking it to mean Christ as the Alpha and Omega, with his mother Mary within. The stone presently has a small sign in Latin and English reading CNEGUMI FILI GENAIUS "What Lieth Here Is Not The Soul".
