fortified (17). In July,secret intelligence was received of an intended attack on theCity by the enemy (49), intelligence which seemed to beconfirmed by the appearance of a fleet off Sandy Hook. This stimulated a forcible report to the Common Council,July 14, by its special Committee of Defense, urging theconstruction of fortifications in Brooklyn and at Hell Gate(9), and on the same day, the corner-stone for Fort Stevensat Hallets Point was laid (17). The bombardment of Stonington, Conn., Aug. 10, 1814(^S), disclosed the presence of the British in the Sound withstartling certainty, and enforced the necessity for swiftpreparations to defend the City on the north. On Thursday morning, August 18th, the Common Coun-cil of the City, with 200 men employed by the Corporationat Bellevue who volunteered their services, commenced afort at McGowns Pass under a federal salute from Capt.Messerves troop of flying artillery.
