Notes Lance Corporal 4-999 Herbert James Mascall enlisted with the NZ Engineers in May 1915. He served on Gallipoli, setting booby traps as the Anzac troops evacuated, and subsequently on the Western Front. On 15 September 1916 an incident near Flers earned Mascall the French Medaille Militaire (LG 1 May 1917, p4162, rec 537) "At Switch Trench, near Flers on three distinct occasions during the afternoon of 15th September 1916 Cpl Mascall was detailed to take wounded men through a very heavy barrage fire to the A. (.).S. He did this successfully three times, returning to his post immediately having to re-pass through the heavy barrage on each journey. He then worked all night with his party constructing a strong-point and because two out of three of his NCO's had been wounded, he remained there all next day with another working party in order that the work might be completed. His conduct throughout this and other operations under heavy fire was an example to all under him."
