Notes German Iron Cross 1914 2nd Class, WW1 The German Iron Cross was established in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars by King Friedrich Wilhelm. It was awarded to recognise acts of heroism, bravery and leadership, and came in three grades, 1st and 2nd Class together with a Grand Cross for Senior Commanders. Several versions of the medal were instituted- the original 1813 Cross, the 1870 Cross, the 1914 Cross and the 1939 Cross.
