Description |
English: Modern pierced white metal commemorative medallion. The borough of Colne had this medallion struck in celebration of the anticipated coronation of Edward VII on 26 June 1902. The coronation of Edward VII and his wife Alexandra, actually took place at Westminster Abbey on 9 August 1902. It had been postponed at the last minute because the King had been taken ill and required immediate surgery to drain an abdominal cyst. The obverse consists of double profile bust of the king and queen & is inscribed EDWARD VII QUEEN ALEXANDRA. The portraits are not of the first order. The reverse shows the corporate arms of the borough and is inscribed BOROUGH OF COLNE CORONATION JUNE 1902. Similar medallions were struck in a variety of metals for many corporations and organisations throughout Great Britain and the Empire. For examples see NLM-0B9C00, BUC-D9F971, and NLM-CEF0C2. This example was probably pierced so it continues to be worn after its suspension loop broke off. Dates to 1902 AD.
The diameter is 37mm and the weight 19.66g |
