Title
Medieval lead papal seal
Description
English: Part of a medieval lead seal from a papal document. A bulla of a Pope Clement, about half of the cast disc with the standard hammered papal 'logo' survives.

Obverse description: Papal title over three lines within pelleted border, reading: [CL]E on the top line, then [ME]NS. The third line would have PP [short for papa] then the number in Roman numerals. As part of the number is missing its difficult to know what it was. There were ten popes called Clemens [latin for Clement] starting with Clement I 92-99 AD to Clement X 1670-76 so it could be any one of those. The style of bullae changed and ones decorated like this date from no earlier than 11th century so this is from any time between 1046 [Clemens II] & 1676 [Clemens X].

Reverse description: One of the facing busts of Saints Paul and Peter with a Latin cross between them, each bordered with pellets and all enclosed in a pelleted border. The faces are identified: SPA [St Paul] and SPE [St Peter].
