Title
Medieval to post medieval: Silver Tau cross pendant
Description
English: A silver-gilt hollow pendant in the form of a Tau cross, perhaps originally containing a relic or remedy. The pendant is missing a back plate which was soldered on separately, and the loop by which the pendant was suspended is broken. Under each arm of the T is a gilded sphere - both appear to be integral to the object - and there is a similar sphere below the suspension loop. On the face of each arm of the T is a raised open quatrefoil at the centre of each of which is a silver pellet (one is now missing), and there is another pellet in the centre of the T. These pellets may be separate fittings but if so their method of attachment is not clear. The fields between and around the quatrefoils are filled with a loose series of lines of punched sub-rectangular shapes which also border the object. The sides have been left plain. The base of the upright arm is pierced from both sides by a circular hole. Length: 23.05mm, width: 16.51mm, weight: 4.13g.
