Divisions have also takenplace in Western, Canada, Kansas, and IowaYearly Meetings, one branch of each of which,together with the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting,where no separation has occurred, are in unisonin support of the ancient order. None of theseconservative meetings took part in the Gen-eral Conference of Friends that was held inRichmond, Ind., in 1887. These divisions are in no way related tothe separation that resulted about 1822 fromthe preaching of Elias Hicks. Doctrinal Statements. — The declaration offaith that was adopted by the General Con-ference of Friends that was held in Richmond,Indiana, in September, 1887 (see AnnualCyclopaedia for 1887), was considered, but notapproved, in the Dublin and London YearlyMeetings. The Dublin Yearly Meeting adopteda minute declaring that it did not see its wayformally to adopt the declaration; but waswilling to receive it as a valuable outcome ofthe conference. FULLER, MELVILLE WESTON. 359 Yearly Meeting, which was adopted at the closeof a long discussion, after expressing the cor-dial esteem of English Friends for their Ameri-can brethren, and conveying to them a freshmessage of love and encouragement, reaffirmedin general terms the belief of the society inthe fundamental and scriptural principles ofthe Gospel of Christ, but with respect to thisparticular article, recorded that this meetingrefrains from expressing any judgment on thecontents of the declaration now produced. The following statement of the doctrine ofjustification by faith and regeneration, andon the beginning of salvation, has been adoptedby the Indiana Yearly Meeting, with the reserva-tion that it is not intended to cover the wholeground of belief on any other point: By repentance toward God and faith toward ourLord Jesus Christ, the sinner experiences .justification.This is pardon, forgiveness, remission, absolution forhis past transgressions.
