Mullerian mimicry is a powerful force for local convergence, but we are a long way from understanding why different geographic populations diverge in colour pattern

Summary[edit]

Description
English: I will refer to these pairs of erato (top) and melpomene (below) as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, from left to right. Number 1 refers to the mimicry ring from the foothills of the Eastern Andes near Zamora, southern Ecuador. Pattern 2 is the mimicry ring from the Eastern Andes in Ecuador further North, near Puyo. Pattern 3 is the mimicry ring near Tarapoto, Northern Peru. The bluish iridescent mimicry ring 4 is from Western Ecuador, from the western edge of the Andes to the Pacific coast. Pattern 5 is the mimicry ring from the Amazon basin and Ucayali rivers near Yurimaguas, Peru.
