Title
Modern Manilla
Description
English: Modern copper alloy (probably brass) manilla of probable early 19th century date and of type 'Okpoho'

The manilla is in the form of a small penannular arm ring comprising a circular-sectioned oval ring (external dimensions: 67.1mm high x 66.7mm wide) of standard thickness (6.6mm diameter) and with a weight of 67.0g. The terminals are sub oval-shaped (22.8mm x 19.6mm) with flat undersides. A rounded ridge runs from the ring to the base of the terminal. There is no decoration on the manilla. The surface has a dark-green patina with areas of pale yellow corosion.

Manillas were used as a form of currency to trade for slaves on the West African coast in the 18th and early 19th centuries. As the slave trade declined in the 19th century the production, largely in Birmingham ceased, although manilas continued to be used to trade for palm oil and other commodities.
