Title
Modern pilgrim badge
Description
English: Copper alloy pilgrim badge. A round milled medallion with apical suspension loop and a ring passing through that loop. On one side is a depiction of the Annunciation, with Mary standing to the left, the angel Gabriel kneeling to the right, with a plant or flower rising from a jar or cantharus between them. Below this scene is the legend WALSINGHAM. On the other side is a depiction of the Virgin and Child enthroned, and a circumferential legend reading: AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA DOMINVS TECUM [Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you], the opening verses of the Roman Catholic prayer, the Hail Mary.

The object is a devotional souvenir from Walsingham, East Anglia, which became a major centre of the Marian cult in the later Middle Ages, and where devotion resumed after the 19th-century legalisation of Catholic worship. It continues today as a major centre of pilgrimage. The uncorroded state of the metal may suggest recent deposition or loss.

Suggested date: Modern, 1900-2000.

Diameter: 26.2mm, Thickness: 2.5mm, Weight: 5.68ms.
