Title |
Modern silver finger ring |
||
Description |
English: Complete ring made from plaited silver wire. Each strand of the plait consists of eight wires. The wires in each strand are parallel, though now distorted. The sides of the ring are not straight; they are C-shaped in cross-section, with the exterior of the ring convex and the interior concave. The ring is now slightly squashed, and measures 28.71mm x 24.71mm externally and 19.65mm x 17.15mm internally. Similar rings made of plaited groups of silver wires are known across the country; they vary in size, shape and tightness of plait. Where the wire has been examined it appears to be silver. There is another example from Coddenham, Suffolk, see SF-64D062, but each strand of this ring consists of six rather than eight wires. It is thought that these rings are probably modern (and hence not subject to the Treasure Act 1996) but their function and exact date are unknown. |
