La peinture montre 2 scènes successives de l'histoire légendaire de la croix que fit réaliser le duc de Bourgogne pour abriter les reliques que Charlemagne lui avait offertes en 802, après les avoir reçues lui-même du patriarche de Jérusalem, en 799. Il confia cette croix à un chameau et à la Providence pour qu'ils choisissent le lieu où la croix devait être conservée et livrée à la vénération des fidèles. Au centre du tableau le chameau porte la croix-reliquaire, il est suivi à distance par les chevaliers du duc Hugues de Bourgogne ; à droite le chameau s'est agenouillé devant l'abbaye de Niedermunster.
