Description

Moov Hotel in Praça da Batalha, Porto

This is the 30's facade of a mythical building in town - the old cinema Águia d'Ouro, which opened in 1897.

History Café Águia d'Ouro opened its doors in the first month of 1839. A few Portuguese illustrious figures passed there, like Camilo Castelo Branco and Antero de Quental. In the Theatre, with side entrance to the cafe, also passed countless artists. In 1908 this old house, also opens to the movies. The novelty was the "cronomegaphone", considered "the ultimate refinement" as the sound only appeared 20 years later. Still in August 1907, arrived to debut the "Cynematographo Edison", the show divided into three parts and viewed with a single ticket. The prices were quite cheap fot the time; 100 reis for the chairs and 50 reis for the galleries. On September 15, 1930, was inaugurated the sound cinema with the film "All That Jazz" with Al Joson. Águia was then one of the best rooms of Porto. On February 7, 1931, was reopened after refurbishment, earning a new facade, the current one, and holding on the porch the symbol of his name, a Golden Eagle.

In 1989, already with the cafe closed and without cinema spectators, Águia was forced to close its doors, being bought by the company Solverde in order to open a Bingo, as happened to Olympia in Rua Passos Manuel. The City Hall didn't approved the project so the space was abandoned, and over time has become a ruin in a high state of degradation. In August 2006 Solverde puts the property up for sale. It is acquired by a Hotel chain that after restoration works on the facade and interior renovations did rise the building from the ashes. The new Hotel opens its doors in October 2011. Part of the interior décor are some recovered pieces such as sheet music stands, microphones, reel films, posters, and more.
