This inducing action of one circuiton another is spoken of as mutual induction. The fact that anem. f. is induced in one circuit by another iB explained by thesame reasdn that an e.m.f. is induced in the secondary of a trans-former, when a pulsating or alternating current is impressedon the primary of the same transformer. This mutual induction is very detrimental to telephonelines,since a receiver is a very sensitive apparatus and willgive an audible sound by a very small fraction of a milli-ampere.
