s, I soon unmistakably made out,the mamma who — far more than the averageAmerican mother as American mothers go now— decided what was good and proper for herchild. This lamb was being brought up as strictlyas if it were English. They had just completed asomewhat long and unrelieved ascent, — so I had,at any rate, previously found it. This upperregion of the mountain rose above the tree beltin three well-marked terraces which were rimmedby walls of rock extremely symmetrical. Eachterrace made a platform fairly level and fairlywide, upon which one was glad to linger for awhile before ascending the slant to the nextterrace wall. I was seated at the edge of the topterrace, a floor of stones and grass and very thicklittle spruce and juniper bushes ; the mamma hadjust attained the terrace next below me, and upthe wall after her had climbed and scrambledthe little lamb with (I was diverted to notice)almost as much difficulty as I had found at thatspot myself. But she, through-out, never became aware of this, and I sat thewitness of a domestic hour full of discipline,encouragement, and instruction.
