Summary[edit]
DescriptionMy Public Lands Roadtrip- Eagle Summit, Steese National Conservation Area, in Alaska (18781944644).jpg |
Eagle Summit is south of the Arctic Circle, but at 3,652 feet, is high enough to experience the midnight sun at summer solstice, and getting there is an unforgettable roadtrip. The highest point stands along the 175-mile, partly graveled, Steese Highway between Fairbanks and the Yukon River, and offers sweeping vistas of tundra, wildflowers, and mountains. Eagle Summit is in a gap in the White Mountains within the 1.2 million-acre BLM Steese National Conservation Area (the only NCA in Alaska). Eagle Summit is the starting point of the 27-mile Pinnell Mountain National Recreation Trail, which ends at Twelvemile Summit (elev. 3,190 feet). Rock cairns mark the trail where it crosses open tundra. In January, Eagle Summit is on the route of the international Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race. In addition to scenic views and adventure, the Steese NCA also offers amazing wildlife viewing - with crucial caribou calving grounds, caribou home range, and Dall sheep habitat. |
