At the time when the Venetians wererebuilding the walls, the Pediaeus, whichformerly flowed through Nicosia, was divertedinto a channel outside the town, which musthave been a great improvement to the generalhealth of the community. To come now tothe Nicosia of the present day, the bazaar,like that in all towns in the east, is thepart a visitor would naturally wish to seefirst. I do not recommend anyone to visitit without a guide, for, if he does, he willget hopelessly lost ; it is a perfect rabbit-warren of narrow streets, all covered in withrough awnings of canvas or matting, withone street exactly like another. Kythraea and Nicosia. coppersmiths in one, drapers in another,bootmakers in another, blacksmiths in another,and so on. Cairo may be larger in extent and itsmerchandise of greater value, but it savourstoo much of the modern world, with itscrowds of European and American tourists,its cheap Brummagem ware passed off onthe unsuspecting as of native manufacture, alltending to create a jarring note of discord. But in Nicosia every sight is unspoilt bythe clash of Western Europe, and leavesthe impression that here is another world,another civilisation, such as St. Paul, andperhaps Abraham, lived in. Every Friday a fair is held in Nicosia,which is attended by the natives from thesurrounding villages in the Messaoria, whobring in their donkeys, cattle, etc., down tohome-made cloths and silks, for sale.
