Title
NARC-EC67D6 : William III : Commemorative Medal
Description
English: A commemorative medallion, or medalet, of William IV.

The obverse has the bare head of William IV right. The inscription reads: WILLIAM IV / crowned Sep.8.1831

The reverse features a soldier holding a sword with horse reared on its hind legs, with dogs(?) in front advancing towards the horse. The inscription reads: BY TRAMPLING ON LIBERTY I LOST THE REINS 1830

According to R.N.P Hawkins (1960) of the British Numismatic Society in his article 'Minor Products of British Nineteenth-Century Diesinking', in the 1820's there appeared an increase in the appearance of cheap medalets relating to the royal family. In 1830 there appeared a small satirical disc marking the downfall of the Duke of Wellington's government and his replacement as Premier by Lord Grey with the assistance of William IV; the reverse type was reused on an obituary disc of William IV in 1837.
